D&G Channels Great Depression-Era Beauty

When one thinks of beachwear by Italian design duo Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, the flesh-baring attire of the Mediterranean typically comes to mind.

This year, however, the designers stitched together a collection for their D&G label that would appear more at home on the blustery seaside of Deauville, the fashionable resort on France’s north coast – circa 1929.

Models strutted down the runway Monday to the sound of “La Vie en rose,” wearing navy blue and white one-piece suits dotted with nautical motifs. The look was rounded off with fabric bathing caps and floppy hats.

However, because this was D&G, the house’s money-spinning label aimed at younger consumers, the homage to France’s stylish past was punctuated with a nod to Times Square circa 1970. Fishnet stockings sprouted from beneath the bathing suits and led down to chunky platform shoes.

Merging one era of excess with another begs the question: Will all the fashion euphoria end in one big crash?
